Baby care: Washing or bathing?

Also among scientific experts is “how” the correct baby care a disputed topic. Because the care of newborn children was established predominantly by traditions and experiences, whose variety leads however pretty often to disorientation and failure. So a wrong skin care can work against in the medium term a healthy skin development and endanger thus also the skin health. Newest studies question many of the past opinions and practices and make now the development possible of uniform, evidence-supported care recommendations.

One of the causes for misinterpretations of the needs of baby skin is that so far few realizations were present over their structure and function mode. The adjustment of the skin to the new postnatale environment in the first days immediately after the birth was only considered as well investigated. Beyond this quite short period neither the ripe process nor central and long-term effects were scientifically deepened of wash and care routines on the healthy skin of newborn children and babies. Thus one assumed newborn child skin and in particular the Stratum are corneum as highest layer of the epidermis and central protection barrier of the body already few weeks after the birth adapted to the new postnatale environment and fully developed.

Bathe is better than a washing
A clinical study at the skin hospital of the citizens of Berlin Charité concerned itself now with different wash methods with clear water and their influence on the skin protection barrier with newborn children. It was examined to what extent bathing two times per week affects itself during one period of four weeks on the natural adjustment and function of the skin protection barrier. A group was bathed in clear water, the other group was washed with a face-cloth and a clear water and afterwards most diverse measurements, for instance the transepidermal loss of water and the moisture content in the Stratum corneum, was made. Due to the study results the researchers of the Charité close on a positive long-term effect of bathing and recommend a bathing in relation to washing.

Uniform baby care standards desirably
Should be considered to the characteristics of the sensitive baby skin with the correct cleaning and care. These can contribute crucially to it, receive the integrity of the skin to and prevent irritations or illnesses. For this reason all three studies recommend the establishment of uniform care standards.
The investigation of different care routines in the two studies of the citizens of Berlin Charité resulted in that two times improve weekly bathing as well as the following Eincremen of the skin the physiological function of the skin protection barrier. On basis of these and further scientific realizations Johnson & Johnson set itself to the goal of developing evidence-supported care recommendations to the topic a bathing and a washing for the healthy baby skin in order to give parents and advisory experts orientation in handling the new generation. Even for further care regime of healthy babies in the future the development is aimed at of care recommendations.
